Georgia Racing Measure Recommended

It has been reported that the Senate Regulated Industries Committee in Georgia last week voted 8-3 to recommend passage of Senate Resolution 135, a measure that calls for an amendment to the constitution which could, ultimately, lead to the introduction of pari-mutuel horse racing in the state.

News of the vote comes courtesy of a report by the Athens Banner-Herald.

The article has quoted the Senate majority caucus chairman, Sen. William Ligon, as saying that he doesn’t think that the legislation has the support of the Senate.

The piece has also quoted Dean Reeves – owner of the top Thoroughbred Mucho Macho Man and president of the Georgia Horse Racing Coalition – as saying that the “people of Georgia now don’t understand why we don’t have horse racing.”

The report explains that it takes two-thirds of the Senate and then that same supermajority in the House to get the legislation on the 2016 ballot.
