Although, Whiteley's cash wasn't in dollars, it was pounds. Also, if you really want to split hairs, he walked away with £1,425,309.
As explained in an article by The Telegraph, Whiteley travelled to Exeter Racecourse in the United Kingdom via his bus pass, entered the track for free via a promotion, and wound up walking out, presumably, the luckiest man at the track this year, at least.
Whiteley cashed on the Tote Jackpot, an exotic in which the handicapper has to select the winner of all six races on the wager.
The Telegraph report states that 363,000 tickets picked the winner in yesterday's first leg, but just 9,076 tickets then repeated their success in the second. The field was slashed again after the third race, which saw 571 punters go through. Only seven people picked the fourth winner, and Mr Whitley was the only ticket left for both of the final races.
"The most exciting bit was when my mate said to me after the fourth race that there were only seven people in the whole country left in the jackpot. And then at the last he said 'There is only one left and it’s this one,'" Whiteley was quoted as saying.
"I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t look – I am shaking like a leaf."
The article explains that the odds against Whiteley achieving this feat were 368,639-1; and it also quoted him as saying, "I am not a horse racing man. I go out once or twice a year."

It won't entice people to
It won't entice people to watch racing but this type of "gimmick bet", will attract wagering dollars. It shouldn't bother the racing industry performing to empty grandstands since they have been doing that for years!
