Jeremes Sweetheart had just enough to edge past race favourite Monochromatic in the closing strides en route to pulling off a 5-1 surprise in Monday’s $23,000 Mares Open Handicap Pace at Dover Downs.
Monochromatic battled with Jeremes Sweetheart to the quarter pole in :26.3 before Monochromatic swept to the lead. Once in charge of the temp she rolled the field through panels of :54.3 and 1:23. Jeremes Sweetheart found late room and used a :27.3 closing quarter to win by a nose over Monochromatic in 1:50.4. Third prize went to Alexachase.
Ron Pierce mapped out the winning trip for Jeremes Sweetheart, who hangs her harness bag in the barn of trainer Eric Ell. The four-year-old daughter of Jeremes Jet-Fox Valley Evanna is owned by Ken Wood, William Ditmar Jr and Stephen Iaquinta. The OSS graduate boosted her lifetime cash stash to $193,465 with the win.
Another OSS graduate, Chancey Lady, became the first $2-million winner to capture an overnight event at Dover Downs as Corey Callahan drove the eight-year-old daughter of Camluck-Art Of Design to a 1:51.4 score in the $16,000 Mares Winners-Over Handicap pace. The Josh Green trainee took the lead in front of the grandstand and completed her winning mile holding off Lorrie Please and Fleeting Flirt N.
Baron Racing owns Chancey Lady who won for the second time six starts this year. She is now a 43-race winner and raised her bankroll to $204,952.
Corey Callahan continued on his multiple win campaign with five winners. Ron Pierce and George Dennis had three wins each.
