Discus Hanover became the first two-time winner in the Open Trot this season at Saratoga Raceway as the Dave Dewhurst trainee went coast-to-coast in Sunday’s (March 3) $20,270 feature.
Jimmy Devaux sat behind the seven-year-old trotter, who cruised unopposed on the lead through and opening quarter of :28 before reaching the halfway point in :58. Continuing to lead to three-quarters in 1:27.1, Discus Hanover hung tough on the lead to fend off Free Willy Hanover (Chris Long) with a :29.2 final quarter to score by three-quarters of a length in 1:56.3. Summit City Sonny (Leon Bailey) finished third.
Discus Hanover’s win was his second of 2024 through six starts. On Sunday, he paid $13.80 to win in the mild upset. The gelded son of Credit Winner-Dancing Flames is owned in partnership by Philip Hale and trainer Dave Dewhurst and has now banked $228,047 for his career.
Live harness racing continues on Monday afternoon with a matinee that starts at noon.
