A bold move going to the half proved to be the winning one for Reel, who cruised to an impressive score in Monday’s $8,500 Preferred 3 for horse and gelding pacers.
Reel, who was sent off as the 6-5 favourite, got away fourth for driver J. Harris. Sure Please and Late Night battled to the quarter pole in :27, with Sure Please eventually gaining control of the racetrack. Harris put the pedal to the metal on the way to the half with Reel, and the gelding marched to the top and proceeded to throw down middle splits of :57.2 and 1:26.1. Reel then used a :29.2 closing quarter to win by a one-length margin over Sure Please in 1:55.3. Taking home third prize was Rough Trade.
Trainer Tim Myers co-owns the seven-year-old son of Shadow Play-Desir with Michael Hale of Livonia, Michigan. The partners watched the pacer improved this year’s record to 2-3-1 from eight tries with the victory. It was the 22nd lifetime tally for the career winner of $153,556.
