Century Downs Racetrack & Casino is set to make history by hosting its inaugural night racing for Standardbreds on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.
This milestone coincides with the Calgary, Alta. racetrack’s 10th Anniversary celebration, making the evening even more memorable for fans, horsepeople and industry stakeholders.
The installation of lights at Century Downs was a key component of the Horse Racing Alberta (HRA) stakeholder Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Century Casinos has successfully met this commitment ahead of the April 1, 2025 deadline, further enhancing the future of horse racing in Alberta.
Geoff Smith, Senior Vice President Operations, emphasized Century Casinos’ commitment to the sport, stating that the installation of a $3.2 million racetrack lighting system at Century Downs is a testament to that investment.
“As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, the launch of night racing marks a significant milestone,” he added.
Night racing presents an exciting opportunity to showcase the sport to a broader audience. With an electric atmosphere and a primetime slot for wagering, this addition strengthens the presence of live horse racing in the province and by simulcast to the world.
Kent Verlik, CEO of Horse Racing Alberta, highlighted the importance of night racing, calling it "another exciting step forward for horse racing in Alberta, providing an opportunity that supports the growth of industry-driven revenue.” He pointed out that this new offering will also further serve the cities of Calgary and Airdrie, providing more ways for fans to experience the excitement of live racing.
The 2025 Standardbred racing season at Century Downs runs from March 29 to Aug. 30, followed by the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse meet from Sept. 20 to Nov. 1.
