Tuesday in Delaware, Sussex County adopted a six-month moratorium on applications for new gambling venues. The moratorium covers video lotteries, table games, horse racing and sports betting, and would not apply to
charitable gaming establishments.
The news comes via a report on delawareonline.com, which explains that the move has come so the impact -- such as traffic, water and sewer considerations -- of large gambling operations can be properly assessed.
The article states that the move does not affect the proposed Del Point racino expansion in Millsboro.
The article also cites County Council President Vance Phillips as saying that the moratorium was needed to protect against a rush of projects seeking to be grandfathered in under any eventual ordinance.
"It may be appropriate to kind of shut the door and give us time to consider the regulations, so we don't have this influx," Phillips was quoted as saying.
