Trainer Garry MacDonald's Ys Delight defeated the popular pacesetter as the longest shot on the board in the $12,000 Preferred Handicap for male pacers on Friday, March 20 at The Raceway at Western Fair District.
Driven by Mark MacDonell, Ys Delight tracked 3-2 favourite Ideal Perception (J Harris) from the pocket through fractions of :29.2, :58.4 and 1:26.2 before springing into action and going away by 4-3/4 lengths at the end of the 1:55.4 mile. The top two were well ahead of the rest while Diamond Ryder (Samuel Fillion) out-finished Harborlite Ambrose (Austin Sorrie) for the show dough.
Up in class off a 40-1 upset victory 10 days ago, Ys Delight scored again at long odds to the delight of longshot players, returning $53.80 for a $2 win ticket at 25-1.
The nine-year-old son of Bettors Delight-Kiss Baby Kiss sports a seasonal record reading 3-2-1 in eight starts and now has 25 career wins and a bankroll amounting to $171,198 for MacDonald.
In other action, the Friday night finale provided a milestone moment for new trainer Victoria Fair as she earned her first career win. The 30-year-old Wellington County conditioner broke her maiden in her 13th career start.
Fair's pacing mare Rose Run Yvette ($9.60) prevailed by a neck in a three-way photo finish in 1:58.3 with Jason Ryan working out a winning two-hole trip. The daughter of Sunshine Beach-Capricious bested the leading 8-5 favourite Outlaw Blue Isle (David Kelly) and the oncoming Lady Speaker (Andy Moore).
