Corey Callahan, the leading driver at Dover Downs in 2010, was injured during pre-race warm-ups for
Tuesday’s first race.
Callahan, driving race favourite Elizabeth Ann, was standing up in his racing bike trying to help his horse untangle her hopples when a horse directly behind bumped into his sulky. Callahan was thrown to the track and complained that his upper arm was bothering him.
He was immediately taken by ambulance to nearby Bayview Medical Center emergency division in Dover, where he was x-rayed. After spending several hours in the emergency ward, he was finally released when it was determined he had no broken bones. Callahan hopes to return to driving this weekend at Dover Downs.
In addition to dominating the Dover Downs leading driver standings with 235 wins since opening day last November, Callahan is second in the 2010 North American dash win standings.
Ironically, a little more than a week ago, Corey's father, Nick, was involved in a freak accident at his farm track. While completing training of one of his horses, the horse stumbled, throwing the elder Callahan to the track where he broke his pelvis. He will be sidelined for several months.
