Tom Petri's My Revenuer, with Bruce Ranger handling the lines, used a new strategy to win Pompano Park's $10,000 Open Handicap Trot on Wednesday night.
My Revenuer, a six-year-old son of Revenue S tried the ‘wiring act’ for the first time – and it worked.
Clocking fractions of :27.2, :57 and 1:25 along the way, My Revenuer held off the late surging Photo King, driven by Jason Dillander, by a neck in 1:54.2, equalling his lifetime best set just three starts ago in a come-from-behind win.
The 1-2 favourite, Jolenes Pinehonker, with Mark O'Mara in the bike, finished third a length away after yet another menacing move on the backside bringing him alongside the leader around the final turn.
Separation from there left Count Speed fourth and Blomqvist next in the field of six.
In a post race interview, driver Bruce Ranger said, "...this horse is used to coming off the pace, so, when I asked Tom (trainer Petri) if this horse can leave, he said that he can leave a little, but has never been a wire-to-wire winner. I said, 'that may change tonight.'
“When Photo King left, I was a bit surprised at that, so maybe Jason (Dillander) had the same idea as I had because his horse (Photo King) likes it off the pace, too. We got a nice breather during the second quarter and I let him have racetrack on the backside to try and discourage any threats and it worked out well."
For My Revenuer, it was his third success of the year and 17th lifetime, pushing his 2014 bounty to $19,906 and $107,160 lifetime.
As second choice on the tote-board, My Revenuer paid $7.80 to win.
