Driver Garrett Rooney will be out of action for the remainder of the week after being involved in the Friday, March 7 accident at The Raceway at Western Fair District.

Rooney was thrown to the track and briefly knocked unconscious when the three-year-old pacing filly he was driving in the seventh race last Friday made a break in stride in the second quarter and fell.

After booking off his listed drives since then, the career winner of 1,836 races told Trot Insider that he hopes to return to action next week after some rest.

"I did go to the hospital after to get looked over and I have nothing broken and had a head CT scan that came back ok because I was knocked unconscious for a minute or two," Rooney told Trot Insider yesterday. "But as of right now, just my wrists and elbow are sore. I'm just going to take the week. I have improved a lot in two days so hoping for next Tuesday."

The 40-year-old Iona, Ont. reinsman is coming off a career year and third straight season driving winners of more than 200 races and $1 million in purses. His 293 wins in 2024 ranked seventh best in the nation and he earned his first driving title at The Raceway with 156 of his wins there.

No other participants were involved in the Friday incident and the race was declared a No Contest. The Alcohol Gaming Commission of Ontario judges reported that the filly Rooney was driving, Mcmuffin, was checked by the AGCO Official Veterinarian and sustained a couple of abrasions.

Please join Standardbred Canada in wishing Garrett Rooney a full and speedy recovery.
