Trot Insider has learned that the fundraiser scheduled for Atlantic Post Calls editor Doug Harkness has been
rescheduled.
The event is still going to be taking place at the Amherst Legion, but at this point the new date and time of the event have yet to be finalized.
When the fundraiser does take place, it will be an evening of entertainment combined with a silent and live auction.
Trot Insider will publish the updated details regarding the benefit when they are received.
Standardbred Canada directors Scott Daniels and Eric Johnston each had the opportunity to visit with Doug Harkness over the past few days and today provided an update.
“He is improved,” said Daniels. “He was very lucid, he knew everything that was happening around him. I’m really encouraged that he’s going to come out of there.”
“He has as strong a grip as I’ve ever seen him have,” said Johnston. “In this situation you have to hope that his status keeps improving.”
Both Johnson and Daniels were also encouraged by the financial support Harkness has received to this point.
“He needs all the financial support he can get” said Johnston. “Any amount of money put into the trust fund for him and his wife will be greatly appreciated.”
Harkness, 71, is continuing to recuperate from a 10-hour surgery heart surgery he underwent on December 1, 2009 in which he had a bi-valve replacement and triple bypass. He is currently recuperating at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Cumberland Regional Healthcare Hospital located in his hometown of Amherst, NS.
A trust account to aid Harkness' family during this trying time has been set up by Diane Daniels, Joe Kelly and Morah Kerr at the Toronto Dominion (TD) Bank location in Truro, Nova Scotia.
People looking to donate can do so via two routes.
The first way to donate is to make a cheque payable to 'TD Canada Trust' with the account number 6334035-5371. Individuals which choose to take this route to donate are advised that these donations will be anonymous.
The other way to donate is to make a cheque payable to 'TD Canada Trust' with the account number 6334035-5371, but to mail the cheque to the Truro Raceway. People that choose to mail the cheque to the raceway will be recognized for their complete contribution to the Harkness family.
