“It was then while jogging alongside of him I realized the young man had talent, but would need to catch a break to make it. A few days later, I asked him if he wanted to work for me, and, for the life of me, I could not understand why he said 'yes.' I was pretty hard on him.”
It is commonplace to hear stories of horsemanship being passed down in the horse racing industry. As a story in The Province by Tom Wolski explains, 86-year-old trainer Bill Young took up and comer Michael Munoz under his wing in 2013.
Young, who is also a former driver, is teaching Munoz, 27, some tricks of the trade. If everything goes according to plan, Munoz will be making a foray into the Ontario scene later this year with some of Young’s stock.
As Wolski’s article explains, Munoz is relishing the opportunity to learn from an industry veteran.
“Bill always has some tricks of the trade to show me, from horsemanship to the business end of the sport,” said Munoz. “I’m very fortunate to be working for him and that we get to spend a lot of time with each other. It’s just another perk of the job. He’s an awesome teacher who never beats around the bush.”
