POLL: What Sport Is Fixed?

Published: February 5, 2009 05:10 pm EST

A poll conducted by ESPN The Magazine recently asked readers which sports they think are fixed.

Horse racing has long been a sport seen by some as a questionable in terms of integrity. With this mindset, the horse racing industry should top such a national poll, right?

Wrong.

According to an article on orlandosentinel.com, horse racing came in not first, second or third, but fourth.

With professional wrestling topping the list, the poll is obviously off somewhat. Seventy-five per cent of respondents said pro wrestling was fixed -- yes, surprisingly only 75%. Boxing came in second at 48% and games from the National Basketball Association (NBA) came in third at 38%.

Horse racing came in fourth at 26%.

College and National Football League football rang in at 11%.

When you disect this, even the pro wrestlers admit it is fixed, so that doesn't count. We have all seen the boxing dives so you get that one. Basketball, a lot of money bet, a lot of hard feelings. So in perspective when you take wrestling off the ballot, horse racing is closing in on second. This should be a major concern as boxing and basketball have entertainment value for the customer, music, bright score boards, cheerleaders, world champions players still playing and heros. That is why people will continue to attend matches and games and bet on them. What does horse racng have compared to that? Giddy up, gone!!!

With all due respect the results probably are what they are because the question ws asked to a diverse group of people of which most of the people polled have probably watched a lot more boxing and basketball then horse racing. A better indication would've been to ask the same question to people who have been following racing for say a period of at least a few years (though persoally I doubt it would take a that long to form an opinion). I would suspect the results of this poll would be drastically different then the other.
