Mare Perishes In Barn Fire

Published: February 4, 2013 01:34 pm EST

A barn fire in Northern Ontario has claimed the life of an accomplished standardbred broodmare and devastated the farm's owners.

The barn was located at Oldacres, the farm operated by Ian & Gail Dow of St. Charles, Ont., located between Sudbury and North Bay. Dow said the barn burned on Sunday, Feb. 3 with the official cause attributed to an electrical fire.

At the time of the fire, broodmare Bone Chill was in the barn and did not survive. The 21-year-old Matts Scotter mare, the dam of noted performers Magical GG and Fleet Sensation, was in foal to Astronomical.

Also lost in the blaze was a lifetime collection of tools, farms equipment, racing tack and horse racing memorabilia. The barn was completely destroyed.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the connections of Bone Chill.

RIP Bone Chill and her unborn baby. Such a tragedy :( Condolences to her Connections

Tears came to the eyes of both Cheri and I as we read of the horrible and untimely death of the mare Bone Chill. This classy individual is responsible for producing one of the toughest and classiest horses we have had the pleasure of training in Fleet Sensation aka "Reggie". He has a home for life with us as we are sure Bone Chill had at Oldacres Farm. We had the pleasure of meeting Gale and Ian in Sudbury and our deepest sympathies are with you both today.

Sincerely,

Cheri Mulcaster and Dean Nixon
