A bold rush to the lead in the backstretch proved to be the winning move for Etruscan Hanover who cruised to a 1:55.3 score in Monday’s featured $34,000 Preferred Trot at Woodbine Racetrack.
It was Mario Baillargeon who made that move with Etruscan Hanover, who sat third past the quarter pole while Wild And Crazy Guy did the early roadwork. Baillargeon launched a bid in the backstretch with Etruscan Hanover, who raced on the lead while parked past the mid-way point in :56.4. Once down to the pylons the gelding opened up a comfortable lead at the three-quarter pole in 1:25.3 before finishing off his foes with a :30-second closing quarter. The margin of victory was 1-1/2 lengths over Zeus Lightning, with Wild And Crazy Guy taking home third prize.
Trainer Ben Baillargeon co-owns the six-year-old son of Donato Hanover-Exotic Destination with Santo Vena, Nunzio Vena and Claude Hamel. It marks the fourth win of the season from just five trips to the track for the 18-time winner. The $17,000 payday boosted his career bankroll to $228,610.
