Woodmere Ohdoya followed up a sixth-place effort in her last start with a confident front-end victory in the featured optional claiming event at The Raceway at the Western Fair District on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
Seeking her second win in three starts since shipping to Ontario from the Maritimes, Woodmere Ohdoya moved twice to the lead early in the $7,600 dash, pushing out of post four and letting Vivs Freight Train (Tyler Borth) past her entering the backstretch before circling back to the front at the quarter in :29. She went through the half in 1:00.1 and past five-eighths without challenge, but Robert Doyle commanded speed from the mare as Brydown Wait N See (Jay Harris) came calling first-over from third approaching three-quarters in 1:30.3. She was chased into the stretch by that rival, but neither Brydown Wait N See nor Vivs Freight Train could track down Woodmere Ohdoya, who reached the line a 1-1/4-length winner in 2:00.2. Brydown Wait N See was second, followed by Vivs Freight Train.
Woodmere Ohdoya is two-for-three this season, her first in Ontario, after winning four of 21 starts in Atlantic Canada as a three-year-old rookie last year. Bill Hamm of West Lorne, Ont. owns and trains the daughter of Rollwithitharry-Much Adoo, who is now a six-time winner in 24 career starts with $25,647 in earnings. The win price was $5.30.
