Red Star Cashflow earned his second claiming series title this year on Friday night at Fraser Downs with a career-best triumph for owner, trainer and driver Brad Watt.
Red Star Cashflow pulled off a 14-1 upset in the $20,000 Spartacus Claiming Series final featured on Friday's card. After finishing out of the money in the two previous legs, the five-year-old No Pan Intended gelding established the lead early on with the inside post advantage and front-stepped his way to a 1:55.2 victory over the 'good' surface rated one second slow. Despite baring out in the stretch, favourite Western Nitro and David McKellar held on for second over Thieving Magpie and Scott Knight.
Watt claimed Red Star Cashflow for $5,500 from the second leg of the Abbetross A Claiming Series on Jan. 11 before winning the $15,000 final the following week and stepping up in competition into the Spartacus.
Red Star Cashflow paid $31.70 to win.
He now sports a 7-6-8 record in 50 lifetime starts and earnings totalling $52,861.
Earlier on the program, Alberta's 2012 Aged Mare of the Year River Lass returned to action after a mid-month break and wore down eventual third-place finishers Call Me Up and Jim Marino for the 1:56.2 one and a half length victory in the $10,500 top mares class. Prairie Illusion and Keith Clark came on for second. Tim Brown drove the winning six-year-old As Promised mare for trainer Kelly Hoerdt, who shares ownership with Blair Corbeil.
