Afternoon Dreams and Sand Wyndham both positioned themselves for a possible sweep of this year’s Don Mills Trotting Series with victories in the second leg on Monday night at Woodbine Racetrack.
It was Afternoon Dreams extending her win streak to six with a front-end tally in the first $25,000 split for driver Mario Baillargeon in 1:56. The four-year-old daughter of Dream Vacation – Form Fitting just narrowly held off an onrushing Andovers Son (Jody Jamieson), with Southwind Rew (Sylvain Filion) landing the show spot.
The Ben Baillargeon trainee is now perfect in four starts this season for owners Sylvia Burke and Randy Ringer of Pennsylvania. Her share of the purse boosted her career bankroll to just under $150,000.
Sand Wyndham used similar tactics in capturing the second division for catch-driver Keith Oliver in 1:55.4. The four-year-old son of Pegasus Spur – Sand Chic easily held off a closing Azur (Jody Jamieson), with John Pauls Legacy (Sylvain Filion) rounding out the top three.
It was the second win in three outings this season for Sand Wyndham, who is trained by Ben Wallace for owner Brad Grant of Milton, Ontario. The victory vaulted him over $104,000 in career earnings.
The $65,000 Don Mills Final will go postward next Monday night at Woodbine.
In the $50,000 Open Trot, San Pail left no doubt for his backers when he went gate-to-wire. Handled by Randy Waples, the five-year-old San Pellegrino gelding cut splits of :27, :56.2 and 1:25.1 before widening his margin to two and a half lengths at the wire, stopping the clock in a career best 1:53.1. Scorpion Moon (Jody Jamieson) was second and Please Poppy (Mark MacDonald) finished third.
Rodney Hughes trains and co-owns San Pail with breeder Glenn Van Camp. It was the second win this season for the gelding, who pushed his career totals to 12 wins and earnings of $385,215.
