Officials in Oceanport, New Jersey are taking the pro-active approach of forming a task force with the mandate of gathering information for governor Chris Christie's administration so it fully understands the importance of thoroughbred racetrack Monmouth Park to the town and surrounding area

.

According to an article on app.com, the task force will also look at ways to make the track more profitable and help ensure its survival.

The report states that members for the Oceanport Task Force on Monmouth Park are still being selected. At this point, the task force is co-chaired by Oceanport mayor Michael Mahon and councilman Gerald 'Jay' Briscione. Former state senator John O. Bennett is also reported to be involved.

The article states that the task force plans to look into twilight racing, increasing purses, hosting concerts and festivals and — the biggest point of contention with the casino industry — allowing slots and other betting programs at the tracks.

The task force is reported to be in existence due to the make-up of Christie's recently-announced advisory committee, which some say is top-heavy with people whose interests are in direct conflict with what's best for horse racing.
