More Slots Coming To Grand River

In a narrow 4-3 vote on Monday, February 9, Centre Wellington Council has given Grand River Raceway in Elora, Ont. the okay to increase its number of slot machines from 200 to 450 via a bylaw amendment.

The Guelph Mercury reports that given the outcome of the tight vote, opinion varies greatly.

The report quotes Ted Clarke, general manager of the Grand River Agricultural Society which owns and operates the raceway, as saying, "We'd like to build a space that would encompass the 450 (slots)."

"As stewards of our community, we have failed," said councillor Robert Foster, who voted against the amendment.
