The desire to fight and show heart is a quality any trainer would love to see in a racehorse, and in the case of pacer Magical Albert – it’s a quality he’s possessed since the day he was born.
As outlined in the award-winning TROT Magazine story Survival: The Fight of a Lifetime, Magical Albert is a miracle horse of sorts considering he’s done his share of battling before he was even introduced to set a of hopples.
Magical Albert now has a pair of qualifiers under his belt, including a clean line that he picked up Thursday evening at Woodbine Racetrack for trainer Anthony Beaton.
Jonathan Drury rallied the three-year-old son of Mach Three-Illusionist to a third-place finish in which he was race timed in 1:59.2. It was a step in the right direction for the youngster who made an inauspicious debut last month at Flamboro Downs.
"He actually made a small break at the three-eighths so Scott Young rightly turned it into a training mile,” said owner/breeder Dave Lumsden with regards to his first mile at Flamboro Downs on November 16. “We probably should’ve schooled him one more time.
“As it turns out, the horse was also fighting some sickness,” Lumsden added. “He was given some time off before a schooler at Woodbine Racetrack on November 30, which he won timed in 1:59.”
With the holiday season fast approaching, many horse lovers will be on the lookout for last minute ideas for their loved ones. If so, be sure to pick up a copy of The Bounty of Illusionist.
