Garrett Whelan wasted no time in grabbing the racetrack with Can I Say in Thursday’s $11,000 Preferred 2 for trotters at Flamboro Downs, and that approach worked to perfection.
Can I Say cruised through panels of :28.1, :58.1 and 1:28.2 before rocketing home in :28.2 to win by 1-1/2 lengths over Winkys Pride in 1:56.4. Taking home third prize in the rich tilt was race favourite Lexis D J.
Trainer Jim Whelan co-owns the homebred with Terry & Clarence Devos of Langton, Ontario. It was the third win of the year in five tries for the five-year-old daughter of Fourth And One-Emerald Éclair. The 17-time winner now boasts a bankroll that stands at $266,395.
Two races earlier in the $7,000 Preferred 3 for trotters it was Dragin The Wagon using front-end tactics to post a win of his own for trainer Jeff Byron and driver Anthony Haughan. The gelding tore through fractions of :28.1, :58 and 1:28 before crossing the line with a length to spare over Hesgotlegs in 1:58. Third prize went to race favourite Keystone Orion.
The four-year-old son of Angus Hall-Bridgeannika races for the Cantelons – James, David and Michael. They bred the 16-time winner who has stashed away more than $85,000 in lifetime earnings.
