As we close the curtain on the 2023 season, Canadian harness racing has witnessed many double-digit winners cross the wire ahead of their competition in a number of major upsets this year — including one that established a new record.
Trot Insider counts down the 10 biggest upsets at the nation's racetracks (fair tracks not included) in terms of $2 win payouts over the past year.
An honourable mention goes to Dynamical Tad, not a winner in this countdown but a horse that still lit up the toteboard in a historic way on Oct. 1, 2023 at Red Shores Summerside. Favoured Irish Ray made a break at the start of his $14,300 Lady Slipper three-year-old trot colt division and snapped his lifetime unblemished 17-race win streak, and in that event Dynamical Tad mustered a third-place finish for driver Kenny Arsenault, just holding off a late-charging Irish Ray for the show spot.
With the 1-9 favourite finishing out of the money and a show pool of more than $20,000, 57-1 shot Dynamical Tad paid a jaw-dropping $1,080.20 to show on a $2 ticket. That return is the highest show payout on record for a $2 wager.
