Driver Marc Campbell, winning five races on the card, guided Sock It Away to his 20th victory this season when winning the $2,500 Preferred Pace at Charlottetown Driving Park on Monday, Dec. 31 in 1:57.3.
Taking the lead from post five, odds-on favourite Sock It Away led to a :28.2 first quarter and continued unchallenged to :58.1 half. Euchred, sitting third, edged off the rail heading to three-quarters while Sock It Away held a two-length advantage in 1:28.1. The three-year-old Pang Shui gelding expanded his margin through the stretch to win by four-and-three-quarter lengths over pocket-sitter Winter Blast. Red Magician, from second over, took third.
Owned by Reg Mac Pherson, Sock It Away lost only once this season while winning 27 races from 33 overall, earning $117,221. Kevin Maclean trains the $2.80 winner.
Campbell also conditioned three of his five winners on the card. He steered Navy Pilot Hanover ($2.60), Jetster ($4.90) and Modern Best ($4.70) to victories. His fifth victory came behind Prince Adam ($16.40) in the finale.
In the $2,350 co-featured Open Mare Pace Dustlanemissmolly led most of the way and turned away a first-over challenge from Ramblinglily to win in 2:00.3. The five-year-old daughter of Brandons Cowboy took control heading to a :29.2 opening quarter. Ramblinglily, sent the favourite, angled first over from third approaching a 1:00.1 half and advanced to put a head in front past three-quarters in 1:30.2.
Dustlanemissmolly reclaimed command to the inside turning into the stretch and hit the wire one-and-three-quarter lengths better than pocket-sitter Drivingthedragon N taking second. Dusty Lane Zendaya took third.
Owned by Jackie Heffernan, Dustlanemissmolly won her eighth race in 32 starts this season and her 23rd in 110 overall, earning $136,486. David Dowling steered the $15.50 winner for trainer Myles Heffernan.
