Over a season with 36 starts, a pattern starts to develop when a horse races well at one track compared to others. Such is the case with trotting gelding Charmbo Tie, whose record at Western Fair over the 2011 harness racing season speaks volumes
.
The four-year-old homebred owned by trainer John Rier along with Randy Rier was making his debut in Western Fair's top class, the $15,000 Preferred Trot. In rein to driver Doug McNair, Charmbo Tie sat fourth in the :28.3 opening quarter before becoming the brave first up challenger to half-mile veteran Long Ago (Bruce Richardson) through splits of 1:00.1 and 1:29.3. Around the final turn, Charmbo Tie was persistently pursuing the pacesetter and McNair urged his charge home for an impressive 1:59.4 score to equal the trotter's lifetime best. Long Ago stayed for second, a length and a quarter back of the leader with pocket sitter My Rebellious Ways (Ryan Holliday) getting show dough.
In 2011, Charmbo Tie (Ken Warkentin - Hetties Charm) has an overall record of 36-5-5-5. All five of his wins have come at Western Fair in only nine starts. In fact, Charmbo Tie has yet to miss a cheque over London's half-miler finishing second three times and fourth once.
