Ashes Cash came from far back to score a 1:54 victory in the $14,000 Winners Over Trot at Dover Downs on Wednesday, Dec. 2. Meet-leading driver Corey Callahan added four more wins to his first-place total, now at 48 after 18 racing days, meanwhile, the 11th race was called a “No Contest.”
In the feature, Callahan moved Ashes Cash to the outside and came fast in the lane to beat Bluebird Reverend (George Dennis) and Hemi Seelster (Ross Wolfenden) to the finish line in a 1:54. The time equalled the lifetime mark for the Cash Hall-Ashameg gelding. It was the Leigh Raymer-owned and trained five-year-old’s eighth win of the season, lifting his earnings to $43,495. Blue Reverend, a top Indiana stakes performer, and Hemi Seelster, who raced in major events in Ontario and won the Goodtimes Trot, finished second and third respectively.
In the following 11th race, a filly and mare pace, Hotwired (Tony Morgan) suddenly went down at the three-eighth pole causing confusion with the seven other horses in the race. The starting car and track ambulance rushed on scene to provide assistance. When the field turned down the homestretch heading for the crowded finish line, the race was called a “No Contest” and all wagers on the event were reimbursed. Both horse and driver were reported to be okay.
Jim Morand drove three winners while Sean Bier, Allan Davis and trainers Doug Lewis and owner/trainer Harry Marsh had two wins each.
