Campbell Makes CDP History Again

Charlottetown Driving Park's leading driver Marc Campbell broke his own single season win record at the half-mile P.E.I. oval on Saturday afternoon as he reined home three winners during the 13-race card.

Campbell started the day needing only two victories to match the 122 single season win record he set last year, and he moved within just one win of the mark right away after guiding Stacey Lund trainee G L Emma ($5) to victory lane in the opener.

With back-to-back wins in the ninth and 10th races, the 28-year-old reinsman made history once again. Campbell matched the 122-win record with a wide-open score in the ninth race aboard Le Fugueur ($4.20) for trainer Darren Trainor and then broke the record with the Trevor Hicken-trained Pan Cushion ($4.20).

Visibility was almost zero with heavy snow as the 10th race field marched down the backstretch, but when the horses came charging down the stretch it was Pan Cushion and Campbell's familiar green, black and white driving suit that flashed over the line for the record breaking mile.

Campbell and Pan Cushion, owned by Jordan Hicken, were joined in the winner's circle by family and friends with a special presentation by Race Manager Brett Revington and Marketing Manager Lee Drake to mark the milestone.

Campbell, who is a candidate for the O'Brien Award of Horsemanship for the second consecutive year, is enjoying a career season in the sulky with 179 wins and more than $462,000 in purse earnings. Lifetime, the resident of Winsloe, P.E.I. has made 950 trips to the winner's circle while earning more than $2.05 million in purses.

On the training side, Campbell has sent out 48 winners from his stable in 2012 to earn a career-high $218,000 in purses, pushing his lifetime win total to 149 and bankroll to more than $738,000.

The single season win record at CDP now stands at 123 with three more harness racing cards remaining in 2012.
