Dark Horse Wine Wins Century Series

Dark Horse Wine held off rival Hurry Home in a photo finish to win the $20,000 final of the Century Milers Pacing Series on Friday night (Dec. 13) at Century Mile.

Driven by Doug Chappell for trainer Rod Hennessy, Dark Horse Wine was hot on her stablemate's heels when Chasing Shadows removed to the front after the parked out Hurry Home cleared down the backstretch.

Dark Horse Wine took over command at the third quarter mark and took off when early trailer Myglamgal came calling down the stretch as Hurry Home split rivals late. She ultimately prevailed by a head in 2:02.3 over a 'good' track on the cold (-16 degree) Edmonton evening. Myglamgal finished third with Chasing Shadows fourth.

Locally owned and bred by Lorne Duffield, the JK Royal Flush-Marilyn Merlot filly finished a close third while making her career debut in the series opener in mid-November and nosed out Hurry Home two weeks later for a maiden-breaking victory in the second leg. Sent off as the even-money favourite in the finale, she paid $4.20 to win.

The Century Milers Pacing Series is for Alberta-sired two-year-old fillies that were non-winners of $15,000 lifetime as of November 3.
