Horsepeople Helping Fire Victims

Published: December 12, 2012 10:48 pm EST

When a tragedy takes place in the standardbred industry, it doesn’t take long for the sport’s participants to rally and lend a hand to those in need.

Racing equipment and cash donations are quickly pouring in to aid those affected by the tragic barn fires in the Goulds, Newfoundland earlier this week.

All horses escaped a Monday blaze at the Beaver Brook Stables, but seven horses and three goats -- owned by Kevin McDonald, Amy McDonald, Gary Rice and Denise Walsh -- perished in a Tuesday morning fire at a barn owned by Dr. Kevin Anderson and Dr. Karla Furey.

Anyone wishing to donate items to the victims of the fires can do so by contacting Mario Glynn (905) 699-9424, Scott Forward (709) 687-6235 or Ken Middleton (519) 222-3711.

Cash donations are also being accepted on behalf of those affected, and an account has been opened in trust of those affected by the fires. Here are the banking details of that account for those wishing to make a cash donation:

We want to say thank you for the tremendous support offered by our local community and the community at large. This is a very sad time for us and it warms our hearts and gives us strength to have friends to lean on during this time.

We say goodbye to Mach Three Extreme, Formac for Melissa, US Charmeleon, Holly (goat) owned by Kevin, Amy, and Caroline MacDonald : PH Golden Girl, Hero In America, and Abs Yankees Rail owned by Denise Walsh/Greg Rice: Joes Rainbow, Moose(pony), King Julian and Kirby (goats) owned by Karla, Kevin, Sam, and Kathleen Anderson.

Again thank you all for your kindness and support during these difficult times. We are blessed to be part of such a community and look forward to better days.

Sincerely,

Kevin, Karla, Sam, Kathleen

What about Standardbred Canada, COSA, OHHA, Greenhawk, the vets, blacksmiths? These people, despite our fears have been wiped out. Time to step up.

Don't have any horses, but Tackmaster Equipment will definitely be sending a cash donation. So, so sad, we are a close community and we we will put these people back in business.

when these things happen words can.t describe the sadness thatpeople feel weather you are an owner or just a fan.hope good things come your way

Looks like Dougie McNair is spearheading a Facebook drive to actually send as many as five new race horses and possibly a broodmare (compatible to Big Jim) to the MacDonalds to replace their stable. Great gesture Dougie... if anyone can help please contact Doug.
