In Georgia, state Rep. Harry Geisinger has been pushing for the legalization of pari-mutuel waging on horse racing for years. Now he believes the question of legalization will be placed on the ballot in 2015 in order for the public to have its say.
WSB-TV in Atlanta recently caught up with Geisinger to discuss the matter with him.
"It's time to do this, the state is looking for dollars," said Geisinger, who also stated that horse racing is currently legal in the state, but that pari-mutuel wagering on the races is still not legal.
In November, Geisinger pre-filed legislation in the House that calls for a referendum regarding the introduction of legalized pari-mutuel horse racing. The bills will be considered in the legislature in the 2015-2016 regular session.
Geisinger has said that much of the pari-mutuel wagering that would be taking place would be “coming from the people that are either driving through, placing their bets on their telephones or online.”
