With a little less than two months remaining on the 2021 calendar, Perfetto is making a late-season push to be in conversation for Older Trotting Horse of the Year in Canada yet again.
After taking home the hardware in that category last season, Perfetto chalked up his fourth win of the 2021 campaign in Monday’s $34,000 Preferred Trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park for trainer/driver Dagfin Henriksen.
The six-year-old son of Majestic Son-Perfect Prelude left hard from Post 7, and he battled with the parked out Hey Livvy to the quarter pole in :27.2 before releasing that 2020 O’Brien Award winner to the position of command. Hey Livvy stepped through middle fractions of :56.3 and 1:25.4 before weakening in the late stages of the mile.
Perfetto tipped out first over on the way to the three-quarter pole, and from there he used a :27.2 closing quarter to win by 1-1/4 lengths over All Wrapped Up in 1:53.2. Grandma Heidi sat third throughout the mile and held on to that position at the finish line.
Sent off as the 7-5 favourite in the nine-horse affair, Perfetto improved his 201 record to 4-6-5 from 20 starts for owner Gerald Haggerty of Camden East, Ont. The 20-time winner pushed his seasonal earnings over $200,000 while his lifetime total inched perilously close to $800,000.
