Trouble At The Track

In a special three-part series, Dan Nyznik of CHEX TV in Peterborough, Ont. examines the implications of the Liberal government ending the slots-at-racetracks partnership effective April 2013.

"The income tax alone that is paid by the racing industry to the province of Ontario was $215 million last year," notes OHHA Director David Gibson. "This is a very large industry that generates a lot of tax revenue for the government."

Nyznik interviews participants from different sectors impacted by the possible closure of Kawartha Downs. Trot Insider has learned that some staff at Kawartha Downs have received notices of termination. According to Race Secretary Jim Huck, the notices are a "legal requirement" in the event that racing ceases when the slots-at-racetracks program ends next year. If arrangements are made to continue racing, those notices would be rescinded.

Great job with this report by Dan Nyznik. Every horse person came across, I think, as loving and needing the industry in their life now and forever. Personally I love Kawartha Downs and its people. Please don't take such a simple and wonderful passion away from me.
