Rose Run Why Not drove past two opponents in the stretch to defeat a a field of male rivals in the $10,000 Preferred Handicap Trot over a Rideau Carleton Raceway surface rated good and three seconds slow on Wednesday, Nov. 5.
Rose Run Why Not dropped in fourth early but moved up a spot when top Rideau trotter Tyrone Bow Tie (Pascal Berube) broke stride on the first turn. Nothingbutadreamer (Guy Gagnon), a recent addition to the local Preferred ranks, popped the pocket nearing the quarter in :29.2 and assumed command.
The group of six raced single-file through the half in :59.3 until Raising Rusty (Stephane Pouliot) left the pocket nearing three-quarters in 1:29.3 to march on Nothingbutadreamer. Rose Run Why Not followed him to the outside for Marie-Claude Auger, and the mare powered past Nothingbutadreamer and Raising Rusty to prevail by three-quarters of a length in 1:59.4. Nothingbutadreamer finished second over Raising Rusty.
Rose Run Why Not won the Rideau Preferred for the third time this season for trainer Carl Duguay, who co-owns the mare with Investissement KFB of Sorel-Tracy, Que. The seven-year-old daughter of Uncle Peter-Loconotion is now 23-for-132 lifetime with $188,581 in earnings. She paid $15.50 to win.
