Mystic Maiden bounced back from a disappointing seventh-place finish in her elimination of the Western Filly Pace to capture the $100,000 final on Friday night at Northlands Park for 19-year-old trainer Justin Currie
.
Driver David Hudon sent the three-year-old daughter of Camystic-Artfromtheheart to the lead from Post 5 and cruised opening past panels of :28.2 and :57.1 with Rossridge Fortune (Keith Clark) in the pocket and elimination winner River Lass (Kelly Hoerdt) in third. As Mystic Maiden raced down the backstretch to three-quarters in 1:25.4, River Lass launched her attack. She came close, but not close enough as Mystic Maiden held by a neck for the 1:56 victory. W Jean (Bobby Clark) came on for third.
Mystic Maiden paid $5.20 to win as the 8-5 favourite. The British Columbia-based filly now boasts 15 wins on her card this year in 17 starts and $143,150 in earnings. She is 20-for-22 lifetime and sports a bankroll of $166,250 for owners Barry MacFarlane of Powell River and the Crimson Racing Stable of Langley, B.C.
One race earlier, Second Fancy ($8.30) cruised to her second straight victory in open company. Trained and driven by Don Monkman Jr., the five-year-old daughter of Allamerican Native-Fancy Trouble cleared the lead in the $11,500 Fillies & Mares Open Pace ahead of 6-5 favourite Nazko Finally (Gerry Hudon) and carved out fractions of :28.1, :57.3 and 1:27.2 en route to victory in 1:57.1. Nazko Finally stayed for second while Lady And Thetrench (Keith Clark) closed well for third.
The victory was Second Fancy’s third of the season in 26 starts and lifted her earnings to $35,436 for 2010. The career winner of $127,549 is owned by Don Byrne Stables 2008 Inc. and Don M JR Stables of Edmonton, Alta.
