It is widely expected that Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich will be approving a bill that will see the state's richest casinos pay a $90 million purse subsidy to the Illinois horse racing industry over the next three years.
Tom Swoik, lobbyist for the casinos, is anything but impressed.
"The whole effect of this thing is kind of ludicrous," he was quoted as saying in an article posted yesterday on heraldnewsonline.com.
According to Swoik, Illinois casinos have suffered a 20 per cent decline in revenue in 2008. He also said 675 jobs have been cut in the first nine months of '08.
"The timing is terrible given the slumping casino industry in Illinois," said state senator A.J. Wilhelmi, who voted against the bill.
