Monticello Wants World Record

How would you like to own a World Record? It could be as easy as winning the Monticello Marathon on the afternoon of Monday, December 15.

The Monticello Marathon will be a one and three-quarter mile trot. The current World Record over a half-mile track (3:45:2) was produced by Poppa IM. The World Record was recorded at Monticello on December 28, 1998. Jack Rice was in the bike for the mile.

“We were thinking about having a two-mile trot, which we have done in the past, but a chance at World Record may be an enticement to attract entries,” said Eric Warner, Monticello Raceway’s director of Racing.

“The world mark for two miles in a race on a half mile track is 4:10.1 set by the great trotter Pronto Don in 1951 at the old Roosevelt Raceway and two consecutive miles in 2:05 or better might be out of reach for most trotters but the 3:45:2 for one and three quarter miles seems more attainable.”

Warner is currently seeking trotters to compete in the event.

Anyone interested in racing in the Monticello Marathon or wanting more information about the race is asked to contact either the Monticello race office by calling 845-794-4100 (Ext. 557) or the Monticello publicity office (ext. 455).
