Trainer Colin Johnson celebrated a major milestone Thursday evening when Validus Deo triumphed at Woodbine Mohawk Park in upset fashion.
The 13-1 score by the pacer pushed Johnson’s lifetime earnings over the $30 million mark – a feat that puts him in some elite company among the sport’s top conditioners.
Johnson, a career winner of 3,452 races has nabbed 45 of those victories this season. He’s also managed to watch his stable bank in excess of $340,000 in the process.
It was the 2002 season that saw Johnson post his biggest, single season totals thanks to 359 wins and purse earnings that topped $4.6 million. The brightest star in his stable that year – and arguably the best he’s ever campaigned – was Electric Stena. That 26-time winner banked over $1.1 million in a career that saw him butt heads with some of the sport’s brightest stars.
