Longshot players who banked on Twin B Rawley to win Monday’s $14,000 Preferred Trot at Western Fair Raceway needed a wheelbarrow to cart all their winnings to the bank as a result of the trotter’s shocking upset
in the feature race.
Twin B Rawley had the outside post position standing between him and the winner’s circle, but it didn’t bother the six-year-old son of Malabar Maple one iota. He got away sixth for trainer/driver Gord McKnight, who eventually treated him to a second over trip. He advanced on cover until called on for three-wide speed at the three-quarter pole, and when McKnight hit the throttle the trotter drew off to win by a length in 2:00 as a 49-1 outsider. Tempo-setting Jazzman Hall was second, and third prize was earned by race favourite Bank President.
Rusty and Deanna Spitzig of Courtright, ON own the 21-time winner, who now boasts an 8-for-34 record this season. The $7,400 payday lifted his lifetime earnings to $271,620.
The longshot storm continued in the very next race when Michelles Idea turned a sweet pocket trip into a 1:56.4 score at odds of 35-1 for driver Paul MacKenzie. Lady Latte threw down panels of :27.2, :57 and 1:26.1 before getting picked off in the final strides by Michelles Idea. She prevailed by three-quarters of a length over Bath Beach, with Lady Latte holding on for the show dough in the $12,600 Fillies & Mares Preferred.
Trainer Ian Reid shares ownership on the five-year-old daughter of Western Hanover with partners Jim Smith and Ian Reid. The victory was her sixth of the season and the 16th of her career. She has stashed away more than $217,000 in her career.
