Star Of Winter's maiden-breaking victory in Century Mile's sixth race on Friday night (Nov. 15) also marked the first training win for longtime harness racing participant Orianna Scheck.
Driven by Mike Hennessy, Star Of Winter ($8) raced mid-field most of the mile and stormed home off the final turn to collar the runaway longshots, Special Coz and Doc J R, in the final strides. She prevailed in 2:03.1 over the 'sloppy' track.
Scheck owns the three-year-old Wink N Atcha daughter, who was making her second career start.
Star Of Winter was a star for Scheck before she even began racing, as the photogenic filly was featured in last year's I Love Canadian Harness Racing Fan Club’s Heart of Harness Racing Calendar.
Two races earlier, the Century Milers Pacing Series for Alberta-sired two-year-old fillies got underway with Mysticurb ($50.50) scoring her first victory for trainer, driver and co-owner Richard Remillard. A 24-1 lonshot, the Mystician miss rallied three-wide off cover turning for home and held off Chasing Shadows and Dark Horse Wine in 2:07.1. Glenn Grainger and Fred Richards also share ownership. The series is for non-winners of $15,000 lifetime as of November 3.
