Beach Terror could have taken a two-hole trip in Monday’s $9,000 Preferred 3 for horse and gelding pacers at The Raceway at Western Fair District, but driver Nick Steward opted to pop the pocket early and put the hammer down – a wise move as it turned out.
Beach Terror, who faced eight others in the added distance event, allowed longshot Demachracy to sprint to the lead before sweeping back to the outside and re-taking the position of command. The opening quarter went to Demachracy in :28.2, but Beach Terror went on to whack out fractions of :58.2 and 1:27.4 before finding the line in 2:05.1. He was two lengths better than the dead-heating tandem of race favourite Southwind Diesel and Buckeroo.
Trainer Gord McDonnell co-owns the seven-year-old son of Western Terror-Beachy Girl with Vince Orlando of Leamington, Ont. The gelding owns a 9-10-5 record this year from 38 starts, and his seasonal bankroll stands at $57,393. Monday’s win pushed his lifetime earnings over $150,000.
