Reitz: 'Sweepstakes Illegal'

Ohio's Beulah Park made news this week with its VLT-like 'sweepstakes machines,' a move that officials at fellow state thoroughbred racecourse Thistledown say they

believe is illegal.

"We're not going to do that at Thistledown," Thistledown general manager Brent Reitz was quoted as saying in an article today by The Plain Dealer. "As far as I'm concerned, [Sweepstakes] is against the law. We'll follow the way the law is written at this time."

The machines operate with prepaid cards that are swiped through readers on pure chance games with names like 'Slots & Stripes' and 'Lucky Diamonds.'
