Beulah Park, Scioto Downs’ thoroughbred neighbor in Columbus, Ohio, is testing the waters in the state with new 'sweepstakes machines' which operate with prepaid cards that are swiped through readers on pure chance
games with names like 'Slots & Stripes' and 'Lucky Diamonds.'
Beulah owner Charles Ruma calls them “almost like a penny slot machine, but it’s not a slot machine at all. They’re just computers.”
The attorney for the games’ Ohio distributor says Beulah’s 30 units will “spread exponentially” through the state, and some 70 besides Beulah’s already are operating in bowling alleys and other sites.
There has been no comment as of yet from governor Ted Strickland or Ohio attorney general Richard Cordray.
