A story in today’s edition of The Edmonton Sun indicates charges have been made against a 74-year-old truck driver from B.C. after he abandoned seven horses

in a trailer in Edmonton.

Authorities responded to a complaint about the truck and trailer on Sunday. A strong odour was coming from the trailer, which was full of feces and urine. The horses, which were being transported to new owners in Manitoba, were abandoned by the driver after the truck broke down.

"They were obviously in distress," said Detective Gary Benoit, adding witnesses told police the trailer was seen abandoned for up to three days. "They were scared, they were jittery, they were jumping around and kicking. They didn't want to come out of that trailer."

Officials at Northlands Park offered to provide accommodations and care for the quarter horses until they can be transported to the new owners in Manitoba.

The driver faces a maximum fine of $20,000 for causing or permitting an animal to be in distress.
