With a set of preliminary legs in the books, it was time for the big money to be doled out to freshmen fillies in Monday’s Ontario Sires Harvest Series finals at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The $46,600 final for two-year-old pacing fillies was up first, and Just Call Me Song pulled off a major shocker for driver/co-owners Louis-Philippe Roy.
The daughter of Sportswriter-Song Writer got away fourth in the five-filly field while Momentarily powered to the top and had the field chasing her past the quarter pole in :27.3. She gave way to favourite Day To Party in the backstretch, and once she cleared that filly paced the field through middle fractions of :55.3 and 1:25.2.
Quebecoise applied first-over pressure on the leader around the final turn, and it was just enough pressure to soften up the odds-on choice. Just Call Me Song, who was still sitting fourth as the field marched into the final quarter of the contest kicked home in :27.2 to win by a length over Day To Party in a career-best clocking of 1:53.2. Momentarily was third.
Roy Shares ownership on the youngster, who hangs her harness bag in the barn of trainer Eric Nadeau, with 1876472 Ontario Inc, Michel Letarte and Jean Allaire. It was her second win of the season from 11 attempts and the lion’s share of the purse more than doubled her earnings to $45,327.
Angelonia pulled off an upset of her own in the $45,100 Harvest Series for two-year-old filly trotters, though it wasn’t quite as shocking as Just Call Me Song’s earlier on the card.
In rein to Tyler Moore, Angelonia marched to the early lead before being overtaken by Saundra. She sailed through fractions of :27.3, :57.1 and 1:25.4 before hitting the proverbial wall. Angelonia angled out of the pocket and used a :30.4 closing quarter to win by 1-1/4 lengths over Da Royal Miracle in 1:57.2. Race favourite Ladyflix encountered major traffic throughout the mile and had to settle for third prize.
Dr. Ian Moore trains and co-owns the daughter of Archangel-Fabulous Tag with Frank Cannon of Sanford, FL. The win improved her rookie record to 2-0-5 from 12 trips to the track and the $22,550 payday bumped her earnings to $53,605.
