Second-crop sire Walner made the headlines at the second session of the 2021 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale, held Wednesday afternoon and evening (Oct. 6), having produced the three highest-priced yearlings to pass through the ring — all of whom commanded winning bids of over $300,000.
More notably, the top two sellers of the 213 yearlings to fall under the auctioneer's gavel are out of broodmares who have proven more lacklustre than is commonplace when it comes to high-dollar yearlings.
Wall To Wall, bred by Lindy Farms of Connecticut in partnership with consignor Preferred Equine, commanded a bid of $525,000 from Nancy Takter. She is the fourth foal out of Italian mare Pearl Axe IT, who won seven of 35 races throughout Europe and earned over $229,000 on the track, and a half-sister to Hall It Off, a six-time winner with $39,000 in earnings and a mark of 1:56.3.
Singeth With Joy, consigned by the Hunterton Sales Agency, grossed breeders Steve Stewart and Douglass Hutchins $510,000 when Kenneth Jacobs placed the winning bid. She is the second foal out of Lonely Lady, whose only other offspring, Cocktail Fashion, is winless in eight starts to date.
“I’m pretty happy; I got my No. 1 and my No. 2,” Jacobs told the United States Trotting Association, with his No. 1 a reference to trotting colt Earthquake Bi, whom he purchased for $620,000 during Tuesday’s opening session of the sale. “(Singeth With Joy) is just a gorgeous filly with a great attitude. The video was exceptional and I liked her conformation and bloodlines. You look for a hole, and if there is no hole, that’s the one you want. She had no hole.
“Of course I’m biased, but I think I bought the best two in the sale.”
The highest-grossing colt on the session was Double Dippin, who sold for $300,000 from Steve Jones to Lucas Wallin by way of the Cameo Hills Fair consignment. He is the fourth foal out of multiple New York Sire Stakes winner Borrow And Spend, who has produced winners Earn And Burn and Spending Spree.
Top honours among pacing-bred yearlings went to Shining Rocks, for whom Mr. Dana Parham paid $270,000. The Captaintreacherous filly is the fourth foal out of World Of Rock, and is a half sister to Breeders Crown winner Peaky Sneaky, who owns a 1:48 mark and has amassed over $730,000 in earnings.
Sixteen yearlings sold for at least $200,000, and 61 commanded winning bids of at least $100,000. In total, $17,927,000 changed hands during the second session, good for an average sale price of $84,164, 36.4 per cent higher than the average sale price on the second day of the 2020 Lexington sale.
The five-day selected sale runs through Saturday, Oct. 9 at the Fasig-Tipton Newtown Paddocks. The third session is slated for Thursday (Oct. 7) at 3 p.m., while the Friday and Saturday sessions will begin as usual at 7 p.m.
