The Light Speed demonstrated both his quickness and tenacity to win off a parked-out trip in the $10,000 Preferred Handicap Pace on Sunday, Oct. 26 at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
After dropping onto the cones in sixth early, Guy Gagnon brought The Light Speed out behind P L Ozzy (Pascal Berube), who shot to the front past an opening quarter of :26.4. The Light Speed advanced into the breeze, rolling up to the leader’s wheel at the half in :54.4 before pushing a half-length in front at three-quarters in 1:22.4, with the top two scrapping along the final turn. The Light Speed finally dispatched P L Ozzy at the top of the stretch, but Hp Lis Shadow (Robert Shepherd) then came to the fore and closed in on the new leader. Hp Lis Shadow looked primed to pass in mid-stretch, but The Light Speed dug in and hung on by a head for a resolute 1:52 victory. Jj Xavier (Mike Healey) was third.
The Light Speed won the Rideau Preferred for the 11th time this season and bolstered his overall yearly totals to 13 victories in 30 starts. Gagnon conditions the seven-year-old, a homebred for Michel Nolette of Princeville, Que. The son of Moon Beam-Jayma has earned $533,689 and won 73 times in 163 career outings. He paid $4.70 to win.
