The public's odds-on choice went on the run early in the $6,500 Lakeshore Cup on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 25) at Leamington Raceway. The miscue threw the race wide open, and the ultimate winner paced a big trip to grab all of the marbles.
The favourite in question, Intrepid Lady (who was driven by Marc St. Louis Jr.), was on the run after her Post 2 start. Seizing the opportunity, the second wagering favourite, Somehowsomeday, was sent to the front by driver Preston Shaw, but they ran into some stiff opposition.
Somehowsomeday was overland in third through the :28.2 opening quarter, and found himself first-up and battling in second as Last Three (Tyler Borth) clicked off the opening half-mile in :57.4.
The battle raged on through the third panel, and Somehowsomeday was a neck back and charging as Last Three paced through three quarters in 1:28.
Things changed quite drastically in the closing quarter of the race, though, as Last Three didn't have much left. Somehowsomeday was ready for more, though, and he surely showed it.
Somehowsomeday had opened up a two-length lead by the time he hit the head of the stretch, and the Fred Bourgault trainee expanded his margin as the race got into its final stages.
Somehowsomeday ended up going on to win by six and three quarter lengths in 1:58. Let Me See finished second and Leafs And Wings third.
Somehowsomeday, who is a five-year-old gelded son of Net Ten Eom, is owned by Keith Cassell of Smith Falls, Ontario.
