Camluck Colt Sets Sale Record

Down Jericho Road, a bay colt by leading Ontario sire Camluck, topped the 6th annual Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition Select Yearling Sale on Friday

, October 23.

Consigned by Downey Stables of Saint John, N. B., Down Jericho Road sold as Hip 30 and was purchased by Ultimate Stables and Dawn Hubbard of Greater Lakeburn, N. B. for $22,500.

Out of the Dexter Nukes dam Village Jericho, who had a race record of 1:54.1, Down Jericho Road set a sales record with his $22,500 price and was one of seven yearlings to top the $10,000 mark at the Truro sale.

His dam had already produce a winner in 1:51.3 and another in 1:52.4.

The highest priced filly was Exclusive Offer, a daughter of leading Maritime first crop sire Coastocoast Yankee. Consigned by Charlotte Ranch in Mt. Hebron, N. B., Exclusive Offer sold for $11,500 to William (Sandy ) Shearer of Brookfield, N. S., one of the owners of world class pacer Astronomical.

Coastocoast Yankee had 10 yearling offerings and three of them were among the top 10 sellers.

Autumn Rose, a daughter of Coastocoast Yankee-Dotted Diamond, got the sale off to a good start when she sold for $10,400 to Dr. Dan Belliveau of Halifax.

No Cane No Gain, an Arcane Hanover half-brother to Last Of Bella, p, 1:51.3. was the top priced Maritime-bred. Consigned by Greg MacKenzie of Scotsburn, N. S., the colt sold for $15,000 going to the connections of Alexander Baird of Trenton, N.S.

Three of the top sellers were Ontario-breds while Pennsylvania-eligible Pondering Magic, a colt from the first crop of pacing millionaire Ponder, sold for $14,000 to Sandra Foley of Fredericton.

Thirty-four of the 59 horses that sold went to Nova Scotia buyers, 12 of them to Cape Breton horsemen who took advantage of some low-end bargains. Some 40 horses sold for less than the sales average of $3,733. Five consignors bid their horses in when prices didn’t reach their expectations.

Sales chair Vaughan Dickie said he was pleased this year’s sale was able achieve an improved average of $500 per head, with yearlings averaging $3,733.
