Standardbred fans will be able to enjoy world-class harness racing from January through to April and then from October through to December, live at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino.

“We are very pleased to offer our guests 70 live racing days next year with an opportunity to increase the total to 82 days,” said Fraser Downs Director of Operations, Ken Stratton.

The 70 confirmed race dates do not include an additional 12 race dates that may be added subject to performance based measures and approval from the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch of British Columbia (GPEB).

“We are very happy with the approval and look forward to working with our racing partners to ensure that our product exceeds expectations and draws guests to our unique and spectacular property located in Cloverdale,” said Howard Blank, Vice President, Communications, Entertainment and Responsible Gambling at Great Canadian Gaming Corporation.

Blank added that “these race dates now officially approved, can be attributed to the hard work and cooperation achieved with the standardbred owners, the Provincial Racing Committee, regulators, and our executive team.”

In my opinion racing in BC is dead. It will be a slow death. It may take a few years, but it is done. Horsemen can not survive on 6 months a year. Mortgage/rent food and clothing are needed year round. With no income from racing and or training bills for half the year, how do horsemen survive? Get a "regular" job for four months? What kind of wage will they earn? Enough to pay their regular bills and board bills on horses? I doubt it. Same thing for grooms. They will all lose their jobs. Ship to Alberta? Check their race dates. If horsemen do go to Alberta, can they afford to pay rent/ mortgage in both places?

This is a sad day in BC and Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino is pleased to announce it.
